Pointe-Noire Marks Congo’s Gas Export Debut
The Republic of Congo has stepped onto the global gas market. In Pointe-Noire, President Denis Sassou N’Guesso personally launched the loading of the country’s first cargo of liquefied natural gas, opening a new chapter for the national economy.
The milestone shipment was produced by the Nguya floating liquefaction unit, operated by Eni Congo. Its departure signals the formal start of the country’s gas exports, a long-anticipated step for the energy sector.
What the Nguya Floating Unit Means
The Nguya unit is a floating liquefaction facility, designed to chill natural gas into liquid form directly offshore. This approach lets Congo monetise its gas resources without the heavy onshore infrastructure that such projects often demand.
By cooling gas into LNG, the unit makes the resource transportable by sea, connecting Congolese output to international buyers. The presidential send-off underlined the strategic weight Brazzaville places on the venture.
