A government in mourning turned to logistics this week, as the Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) began arranging the dignified return of one of its most senior officials.
A Council of Cabinet Marked by Loss
The Council of Cabinet met on 19 February in Brazzaville under Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso. Its central task was practical: organising the repatriation of the remains of Firmin Ayessa, the State Minister who died on 17 February in Turkey.
The session carried visible emotion. Ministers were absorbing the loss of a colleague who was still serving in office at the time of his death. The head of government opened proceedings with a tribute to the departed.
Arrangements for a Dignified Farewell
Makosso shared concrete organisational measures with cabinet members. The discussions focused on welcoming the late minister home with the honours owed to his rank, including provisions for the wake and the funeral ceremonies to follow.
The emphasis stayed on dignity. Rather than dwelling on the circumstances abroad, the cabinet directed its attention to the steps required so that the country could bid farewell to a serving State Minister with appropriate solemnity.
A Long Career at the Summit of the State
Firmin Ayessa was a seasoned statesman, accustomed to the demands of high office. From 2017 to 2021 he served as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the Civil Service, State reform, Labour and Social Security.
In 2021 he was raised to the rank of State Minister, Minister of the Civil Service, Labour and Social Security. He held that portfolio until his death, closing a career spent at the centre of Congo-Brazzaville’s administrative machinery.
